Loose lead walking help in Essex

Assisted lead walks for dogs who struggle out on walks

Help for pulling, barking, lunging, stop-start walks, and owners who feel tense before they even pick up the lead.

Walks should be one of the enjoyable parts of owning a dog, not the part that leaves both of you stressed before you have even reached the end of the road. If walking your dog has started to feel hard, Jennie can help you slow the picture down and make it feel more manageable again.

Jennie can meet you on a walk and coach you in real time, or start with a short behaviour consult first if leaving the house already feels too big. The aim is to help you understand what your dog needs on the walk, what to change first, and how to make future walks feel calmer for both of you.

Support starts with a Basic Assisted Lead Walk at £60, with a home-plus-walk assessment at £120 and a two-visit Premium Behaviour Package at £169 if you need more depth.

Three ways to start

  • Basic Assisted Lead Walk £60 - 60 minutes, meet and go, with live guidance during the walk using positive reinforcement.
  • Behaviour Lead Assessment £120 - around 90 minutes, starting at home and then moving into the walk itself.
  • Premium Behaviour Package £169 - the assessment plus an extra assisted walk on a different day and route.

If you are not sure which route fits best, Jennie can help you choose the right starting point before you book.

What this can help with on walks

Pulling and loose lead walking

Help for pulling, rushing, zig-zagging, stop-start walks, and learning how to make the lead feel calmer and easier to manage.

Barking, lunging, and reactive walks

Practical coaching for barking, lunging, trigger awareness, distance, timing, and rewarding the right choices when walks feel too big.

Owner confidence and calmer routes

Support so you understand what to do in the moment and can stop every walk feeling like a test you might fail.

Walk support in practice

Calmer handling where the hard bit actually happens

Assisted walks are most useful when you can see the changes in real time: slower movement, clearer lead handling, and better reward timing while Jennie coaches you through the moment.

Route planning

Less pressure, better choices

Good walk support often starts with choosing the right route, the right distance, and the right level of challenge so your dog can cope and learn without being tipped over the edge.

How this works in real life

We can meet on a walk, or build up to the walk more slowly first.

Assisted walks are useful when behaviour changes as soon as you step outside. Rather than only talking about the problem indoors, Jennie works through the walk with you so you can practise timing, movement, rewards, and setup while it is actually happening.

If the hardest part starts before you have even left the house, a short behaviour consult first can help Jennie look at the wider picture and prepare you both for the walk itself. That often gives owners more clarity and makes the outdoor work feel less pressured.

Which route tends to fit best

  • Basic Assisted Lead Walk is best for exercise, enrichment, routine support, and owners who mainly need live coaching while they are out.
  • Behaviour Lead Assessment is best for lead reactivity, frustration, or over-arousal that starts around the door or before the walk settles.
  • Premium Behaviour Package is most useful for reactive on lead dogs who need the first session and then a second walk to generalise the work.
  • Follow-up notes are included with the Behaviour Lead Assessment and Premium Behaviour Package so you leave with a clearer plan.

If you want help deciding, the easiest thing is to get in touch and Jennie can point you to the right route.

Walk support reviews

More confidence when the hard part is the walk itself

These reviews fit owners who needed practical help outside: calmer handling, better lead walking, and more confidence in the moment rather than just advice to try later.

"Our dog was very responsive and walking properly on a lead started to improve."

Jennie came to see me and my wife at home to help with our new rescue border collie who has a number of issues. She was very thorough in her advice and clearly knew her stuff as our dog was very responsive. We went for a walk and she made various suggestions which seem to be working as regards walking properly on a lead. Followed up with a very helpful email. Would thoroughly recommend.

"Life on our walks has drastically improved."

If you're hesitant, I would 100% recommend Jennie. After the first home lesson with Jennie we noted a vast improvement in our behaviour, so the dog has followed suit. Jennie has already helped us understand what makes our dog react and life on our walks has drastically improved. Looking forward to the next training session.

"She built trust between my pup and me by using a lunge lead and recall tips."

I came to Jennie with mainly reactive behaviour around other dogs and selective listening. On the second meet up, after putting things into practice in the meantime, she solidified our original training and also built some trust between my pup and me by using a lunge lead and recall tips.

Since then I have taken him to meet several dogs and even to another dog's house for a complete off lead play date and it went absolutely brilliantly.

Assisted Lead Walk FAQs

Are assisted lead walks suitable for reactive dogs?

Yes, they can be a strong fit when barking, lunging, pulling, or big feelings are showing up most clearly on walks. Jennie helps you work through the setup in real time so you can practise calmer handling and clearer choices outside.

Do I need a behaviour consultation first?

Not always. Some owners book assisted walks as a focused stand-alone service, while others start with a short prep consult or add walk support after a behaviour consultation when the main struggle is happening out on walks.

How long is an assisted lead walk session?

The Basic Assisted Lead Walk is 60 minutes. The Behaviour Lead Assessment is around 90 minutes because it starts at home before moving into the walk, and the Premium Behaviour Package includes that assessment plus an extra 60-minute assisted walk on another day.

What are the assisted lead walk options?

You can book a Basic Assisted Lead Walk (£60) for a structured 60-minute walk, a Behaviour Lead Assessment (£120) for home-plus-walk support with follow-up notes, or the Premium Behaviour Package (£169) if you want the assessment and a second assisted walk to practise on a different day and route.

Can I book more than one assisted walk?

Yes. Some dogs and owners do well with one focused reset, while others benefit from follow-on sessions so the walking plan can build up more steadily over time.

Where do you offer assisted lead walks?

Assisted lead walks are offered in South Woodham Ferrers and across Jennie's Essex service area, including local support around Chelmsford, Maldon, and nearby towns where the walk setup is a good fit.

What happens during an assisted lead walk?

Jennie works with you and your dog in real time, helping with movement, timing, reward placement, distance, and how to handle the moments that usually go wrong. You are not just being told what to do later, you are practising it together there and then.

Can this help with pulling as well as barking or lunging?

Yes. Assisted lead walks are useful for loose lead walking, pulling, over-arousal, frustration, and reactivity. The session is adapted to the thing that is making walks feel hardest right now.

Will I get advice to practise after the walk?

Yes. The aim is for you to leave feeling clearer, not more overwhelmed. Jennie will talk you through what to keep practising and what to prioritise between sessions.

Is this suitable if I feel nervous handling my dog outside?

Absolutely. One of the biggest benefits of assisted walks is building owner confidence. If you dread the walk or feel unsure what to do when things escalate, this service can help you feel steadier and more prepared.

If walks have become the part of dog ownership you dread, start here.

You do not need to keep hoping the next walk will somehow go better on its own. Jennie can meet you on a walk, help you prepare for one, and show you what to change first so walking your dog feels calmer again.
